MUMBAI: The Shiv Sena will oppose the proposed redevelopment of the lush green Maharashtra Nature Park.
In a press release, a party spokesperson said: "We have come to know that an MoU was signed between MMRDA and Observer Research Foundation (ORF) to redevelop the nature park. We will urge the chief minister and the environment minister to cancel this MoU."
TOI had earlier reported about the divided opinions and viewpoints among green activists with regard to the changes planned at this green zone, formerly known as Mahim Nature Park. However, ORF had informed that their plan, as per the MoU with MMRDA, will not compromise on the tree cover, and will enhance the greenery and increase footfalls inside the nature park.
There are over 18,000 trees here. There are also 128 types of birds, 82 butterfly species and over 32 reptiles present inside the vast expanse of MNP spanning 37 acres.
Prior to its conversion as a nature park, the area was used as a dumping ground. tnn
