DELHI: Close to a hundred waste-pickers met chief minister Arvind
Kejriwal on Thursday to demand that they be involved in solid waste
management by giving them access to door-to-door waste collection.
The waste-pickers, belonging to Safai Sena, a registered organization of waste collectors and recyclers presented a memorandum to the CM with a list of their demands. The CM met them briefly to assure them that their demands will be looked into.
The protest was mainly against waste-to-energy technology, which involves incinerating waste to produce energy. But this doesn't have any scope for recycling by informal waste workers. There are close to 1.5 lakh waste workers who will face unemployment if more waste-to-energy plants come up, they said.
