Hosur man killed by jumbo herd



HOSUR: An elephant herd trampled a 66-year-old farmer to death near Hosur in Krishnagiri district on Sunday morning. Forest officials immediately issued a cheque for Rs.25,000 as immediate relief to the victim's kin.

The deceased has been identified as M Muniappa (60) a farmer from Satthanur village in Denkanikottai Taluk. On Sunday morning the deceased has left his house to attend nature's call when the incident took place. When he failed to return home, his wife Seethammal and other villagers started a search for him and found him dead. "His wife had approached us for help after he failed to return home even after three hours. Unfortunately, we found only his dead body," said S Latchumaiyaa, a villager.

"We have alerted all villagers about the elephant herd that has entered into Hosur city on Saturday morning," said AK Ulaganathan, District Forest Officer. "We suspect that one of the elephants hurled Muniappa a few meters away which led to his death," he added.

Villagers informed forest officials immediately and they rushed to the spot. "We were informed by the village people about the incident and we immediately released a solatium of Rs.25, 000 to the family of the deceased. We are taking measures to chase the herd back into the reserve forest in Thally near Karnataka state border," Ulaganathan said. After 2pm on Sunday afternoon, forest officials eventually managed to drive the herd into the Thally Reserve Forest, a forest
